The poster represents Claude Lévi-Strauss’ idea that written language is a social convention. He thought that written language is comprised of fragmental units of meaning, which are syllables, and these are minutely divided into individual components, which are phonemes. According to him, written language is a serial unit that is precisely organized with these fragmental components and units. Therefore, written language exists only in the relationship between the linguistic convention and non-linguistic factors that affect changes in language.
